Ch 1-3 ~ A New Friend
Thick forest trunks had tamed the old lady’s shrill cries, softening them to an awkward song. Its dull notes, now a curious melodic drone losing in the distance, caught in the canopy of bare branches above, tangled in the meandering walls of tree-bark and bush as the bright morning’s breeze played with them.
Aurelia felt protected by the skeletal cover; they were not lifeless bones but a network of vessels soon to spill forth life sleeping in the blood of its hidden greenery. Day by day she waited for the birth of those first buds, the shoots of emerald bullets which burst the earthen bark, breaking out into bulbs of tight leaves which grew toward the dream of summer solstice.
